Grooming Tips

(How to keep your Groomer happy & your Wallet fuller)

1. Never bathe your dog without combing it first!

(The water makes the matting worsen)

2. Brush to the skin, not just the top layer!

(The groomer usually charges extra if dog is matted)

3. Don't use people shampoo/conditioner on dogs!

(It's too harsh for a dog's hair/skin & clogs clippers)

4. Keep your grooming appointment!

(Groomers tend to get upset when you don't show-up and don't call to cancel the appointment. You may lose your regularly scheduled appointment to someone else.)

5. Tell the Groomer just how you want dog clipped!

(If we don't know...you won't be happy)

6. First time groom for your puppy?

(At home, use your blow dryer (air only..no heat) so the puppy is use to loud noises. Handle it's feet so the groomer will be able to shave between the pads and cut the nails with no problem)

7. Look at dogs the Groomer has groomed!

(But remember, the Groomer groomed it the way the owner asked)

8. Mistakes do happen!

(It's hard to get a clean shaven dog without some clipper marks when the dog is FAT or it's jumping all over the place! But, don't worry, the hair does grow back. Quit killing your dog with kindness and put it on a diet!)

9. Teach your dog to STAND!

(Using one finger placed under the flank, lift gently & tell the dog to STAND. Your Groomer & your Veterinarian will love you for teaching your dog this!)

10. Own a Terrier?

(Some Terriers have have soft coats & some have hard coats. Soft-coated Terriers can be clipped, but hard coated Terriers should be stripped with a stripping comb. When bathing a hard coated dog, use very little conditioner (if any). Their coats are not meant to be soft!)

11. My favorite type of dog?

(One that is well behaved and well groomed!)
